What's Hot in Torino
Here are the things journalists were yacking over yesterday.
Ohno moving to the outside to make a pass he didn't need to make in his semifinal heat (report) and blowing the race and a medal chance, seeming to come down with his hand on the back of Li Ye's skate before losing control and coming out of the turn way wide.
Shaun White's brilliant Half Pipe performance (report). Now, if they subtracted points for the interview after...
Groans during the Cross Country Skiing Mens 30km Pursuit (report) when Italians held the top spots late in the race, but faded, Pietro Piller Cottrer hanging on for a third.

Kildow, radiografia confortante
I normally don’t get involved in things like this, but now I do….and for a good reason.
Sorry, but the cold hard truth is Dung-Sung (is that his name?) lost in 2002 because HE is not a true athlete. It is he sitting up there as a “sports” coorespondant for Korea, right? That figures. What a cheap shot. If you ask me and my family, he shouldn’t even be in attendance at The Games. Who the h**l screwed this up? So how many people can skate with the one you upset just four years ago looking on with a smug, rather evil expression…like he’s going to get Apolo no matter what. And who’s to say that the skaters from Belgium and Hungary weren’t just “flunkies and fall-guys”? They were DQed for crunching Apolo and causing all this mayhem in the first place, yes? These guys were crunching Apolo at least twice in two earlier races that I could see before they were finally DQed. What’s up with this?
I just hope that this “Dung-Sung” guy from Korea realizes that it is Ahn and the other guy who won the medals and not himself. Living vicariously is a very dangerous habit to get into and it can lead to illness. Someone needs to remind this “Dung-Sung” or whoever that one does not award or applaud a tenor for merely clearing his throat. If this guy wants to beat Apolo, it is HE who must do the winning. “Dung-Sung” needs to be man enough to meet Apolo on even ground or he and the Koreans should show some self-respect and shut it, forever. This business of playing silly games (let’s see, someone screwed with Apolo’s schedule…like “let the MENTAL GAMES begin”, huh?; the Hungarian and Belgium guy crunched and pushed Apolo….I could go on and on) are not only ridiculous but a sure sign of unprofessionalism when they are left to go unchecked by the Torino and Olympic Officials. How can the Olympic Officials expect the athletes to be professional when the so-called “professionals” supposedly handling the schedules, etc. are seemingly allowed to screw things up at the risk of and leading to further bad sportsmenship? I mean, really.
To the Koreans and to “Dung-Sung” I say….remember, it is Apolo who is competing not YOU, “Dung-Sung”. Okay? That’s what it’s all about. That’s the bottom line. According to the current schedules at the Official Olympic site and inspite of some creative screwing around with Apolo’s head (most probably by you and your idiot friends), Apolo is still in the “ON” position and still has a shot at a medal or two. It’s his for the taking because Apolo IS one of the best. He is a true athlete who consistantly gives his best inspite of the cheap tricks that are thrown at him.
By the way, my family and I really, REALLY do enjoy your “weather reports” from the sports booth, “Dung-Sung”.
Viva L’Apolo…Go Chunkie…Go APOLO!
Think like Mercury…BE like Mercury…BE the Mercury!
No seriously, Apolo…should you get the chance to read this. My friends and I believe in you. You’ve been through worse. You can do this. Make the nay-sayers live to regret it all. It’s time to play your game, now. Shut ‘em down.
Watched enough of both the Canadian and US Women’s Hockey games, no, they’re head and shoulders better than the rest, so that Gold Medal game should be something to watch.
One comment, on sportsmanship. Some day, and it may be many years away, but people won’t forget that Canada scored 16 goals on Italy, then another 12 on Russia. Talk about piling on! It’s one thing to be dominant, it’s another to rub people’s nose in it, so, here’s hoping we beat the crap out of them next Monday. And, some day, Russia will beat them to a pulp too, just to do it. Not a very bright move to do that to some of these proud kids out there trying to compete.
When it’s the 3′rd period, and you’re winning like 10-0, it’s time to ease up. That’s not sportsmanship, it’s just bullying. The US team, on the other hand, have done that, once their games are clearly in hand, they start playing everyone to get ice time, and they don’t press quite so hard.
Comes from the coach down, so that’s who to blame on the Canadian side…
A little off topic, what was the music selection the Americans skated to? The pair with the triple axle throw?? Thanks
Okay, I understand the Half Pipe as an Olympic sport. What I don’t understand is the US team grabbing their crotches and showing in front of the camera or the need to have the pants falling off to show their “rear ends”. Have we completely gone down hill in the decency department? Bad enough we have to watch a commercial of a guy in a public toilet trying to flush with his foot (it’s too idiotic to explain further) at least 40 times in one night, but see American adults grabbing their crotches….is it to make sure it’s in there? Every generation has a rebel streak but usually ends when they become an adult. Let’s not even discuss how the piker winners didn’t know a word of the National Anthem.
Katie Couric is in Torino, Italy but opening day, she’s dressed in multi-colored stringy coat with citrus fruit colors. All the Italian women and women with class, are walking around in mink or leather coats. Who dresses her? Does she own a sweater or jacket that actually closes in the front or does she have to dress like she’s 11? Not to say that the clothes the youth of today are wearing are worth paying for. The all look like they belonged to someone else who shrunk them. Then, she insults an Italian chef or actually insulted America by turning her nose up at some of the traditional foods of Torino. Did anyone teach her how to fake it? What is the criteria for getting her job to represent America? Why can’t we see all the medal ceremonies of other Olympian winners, like the Luge winner from Italy? Enough already with what Katie can and can’t get into with the food and show more of the ceremonies and other people around Turino. She has to read practically everything from her obvious notes. Pathetic.
So far, the most amazing event I’ve watched was the men’s 30K pursuit, when the prev. olympic champion from Norway(?) fell at the beginning of the race. Even the commentators said he had no chance of coming back, but his fellow countrymen went to the front of the pack to slow everyone down, and he came back in the last 300 meters or so to take silver. I have barely heard a word about it since it happened, why is that?
Don’t watch the idiot on the Today show, there’s actually live coverage going on at the same time on USA or CNBC.
“Katie” and “class” are two words that don’t belong in the same sentence.
USA, CNBC and HDTV are broadcasting both live and tapedelayed events. Nothing like eating breakfast watching women’s hockey!
The kids who are winning the halfpipe competition are just that kids. The oldest is 19 or 20. I’m watching the guy who won gold in speedskating at the medal ceremony, and he didn’t sing the anthem at all!
